Summer Driver and Traffic Safety Education
Dear Parent,
Your son or daughter is enrolled in the Driver and Traffic Safety Education course. This course consists of two parts: (1) classroom instruction, and (2) “on the road” instruction.
In class we teach the fundamentals of good driving, and encourage safe driving attitudes and habits. We will study motor vehicle laws, insurance, local traffic regulations, rules of the road, automobile maintenance and economy of operation.
The road instruction will be under my immediate supervision in an automobile owned by the school district. The school district arranges for complete insurance and adequate warning signs are for maximum safety.
The main purpose of this course is to prepare and educate our students to be safe and sensible drivers on today’s highways. I know that conditions on the highways today are different from those a few years ago, and through this program, we plan to prepare safe drivers. However, our success depends largely upon the student. In addition, the help and cooperation of the parent is needed to help the school to adequately prepare the student for driving. One way the parent can help is to give the student extra driving experience, since the time spent in this program is usually limited. We count on your cooperation in this effort to create safe teenage drivers for today’s communities.
The Motor Vehicle Test, which students desiring a license must pass, is under the supervision of New York State. I have no control over, whether students pass or fail this test, neither am I involved in issuing of a license. To gain maximum benefit from our program we recommend that students not already in possession of a license wait until the end of the course before trying their motor vehicle road test. However, if you feel your son or daughter has mastered sufficient driving skills prior to completing the course, do proceed to make the necessary arrangements for him or her to take the test.
At the completion of this course, a MV-285 is issued to all students passing both the classroom and in-car instruction. This card allows the student at the age of 17 to receive a Senior Operator’s license (Class D license) which allows them to drive at night.
Insurance certificates will also be issued those who successfully pass the course. This certificate, under certain circumstances, will allow for a substantial reduction in the cost of your automobile insurance.
We welcome any questions, comments or suggestions concerning our Driver Traffic Safety Education program you may have. Please feel free to contact us at any time.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
